Medicare Provider ALERT!

You’re being hit with a Medicare penalty and You Don’t Even Know It!!!

What is MIPPA?

First of all, creating an electronic prescription or e-prescribing is the secure, real-time electronic delivery to providers and pharmacists of patient specific drug medication information. E-prescribing is done using a standalone electronic prescription system or an electronic health record (EHR) systems.

electronic prescription

The government, via a program called Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) gives bonuses and PENALTIES to eligible Medicare providers who write prescriptions. This is a 5 year medicare incentives program that ends in 2013.

Who is Safe from Penalties?

If you’re an Orthotist, Prosthetist, Audiologist or Optician, this blog post is not for you…..It’s for those MIPPA qualified Medicare providers who are at risk for the 2012 penalties. Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase “If you knew better, you would do better”. So if you are just finding out about the MIPPA program, it probably too late. Ignorance is going to cost you.

But it’s only June 30,2011

The good news is that you can receive a 1% bonus if you write 25 electronic prescriptions by the end of 2011. Normally the deadline for the incentives and penalties are the same. But, the 2012 penalty cut off deadline is June 30, 2011. Meaning, if you do/did not write 10 electronic prescriptions by June 30, 2011, i.e. TODAY” you’re subject to a 1 % penalty.

At this point, the best you can do is work on getting the 25 prescription, so you can earn the 1% bonus to offset the 1% penalty.

Another Deadline:
The HITECH Act requirement for Medicare and Medicaid physician and hospital providers to implement and use an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system by 2014. If you miss that date, there will be penalties as well.
