What Are the Meaningful Use Electronic Health Record Deadlines?
Under the HITECH Act (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act), eligible health care providers can receive incentive payments for electronic health record adoption and meaningful use. Only health care providers who accept Medicare or Medicaid are eligible for the HITECH Act EHR incentive program.
What’s Meaningful Use?
The HITECH Act strive to reduce healthcare costs while increasing the quality of care. Meaningful use requirements are quality measures. If you have no idea what the 25 meaningful use criteria are for eligible private practice physicians or the 24 meaningful use objectives for eligible hospitals, then you’re too late for these reminders.
How do I get Incentive Payments?
The process is:
1) acquire or upgrade electronic health record software,
2) demonstrate meaningful use of your EHR software
3) attest to CMS that you have met the meaningful use criteria
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) wants to help. They’ve created something called the The Meaningful Use Attestation Calculator where you can assess whether you have in fact accomplished meaningful use. But good certified electronic health record systems have meaningful use reports which will tell you that information as well.
There are some critical dates you need to be aware of:
Sept. 30:, the last day that hospitals can include in their 90-day reporting period for attesting to 2011 meaningful use;
Oct. 3, the last day that eligible health care professionals can begin their 90-day reporting period to demonstrate meaningful use in calendar year 2011
Nov. 30, the last day for hospitals to register and attest to receive meaningful use incentive payments for fiscal year 2011.
Feb 29, 2012: deadline to register and attest to receive meaningful use incentive payments for calendar year 2011
